July 2015 Meeting – Radio Controlled Quadcopters

GUEST SPEAKER:  Luke Williams, AE5AU
“The Radio of RC”

The July 6th Meeting at Larry’s Pizza was a packed house–42 members and guests in attendance.  Luke Williams, AE5AU, was our guest speaker and he did not disappoint us with his presentation on radio controlled model aircraft.  He spoke mostly about “quadcopters” or “drones”.  We got a hands-on and up-close look at some of his current projects.  Did you know that “drones” and other radio controlled craft commonly use amateur radio frequencies in as many as six different ham bands?  If you didn’t, you are not alone.  Many of the operators of those craft don’t know it either.  Luke spoke about how those bands are used in RC aircraft.  Luke is a current CAUHF Board Member, long time RC hobbyist and Extra Class Amateur.

baofeng_UV82LOCATION:  This meeting was held at Larry’s Pizza, 12911 Cantrell Road in Little Rock. Those who stuck around until the end of the meeting and participated in the $1 raffle, had a good chance of winning a new Baofeng UV-82 dual band, hand held radio (the latest model).  There were some other nice prices including a Kobalt 25-piece socket set, and 33-piece Irwin Drill/Driver Set, an 8-piece set of Home Depot Brand pliers and a 16-piece set of DeWalt Magnetic Driver Bits.  Be sure to mark your calendars for the NEXT Meeting, scheduled for Monday, October 5th!
